First, a word about our name: the word yaldah is Hebrew and the stylized "Y" of our trademarked logo contains the first two Hebrew letters (yud and lamed) in yaldah. As a verb, yaldah means "gave birth." Many authors will tell you that writing and publishing a book is much like giving birth to a child, and it is those labor pains for which Yaldah Publishing is named.
Yaldah Publishing was launched in 2003 with the goal of publishing quality books by women authors with a strong preference for those written from a Jewish perspective. Why women authors, you may ask? Because outside of children's books, women are sadly under-represented in Jewish literature. We are working toward a change in that.
Founded on the value of K'lal Yisrael, we encourage books that reflect the diversity of Jews and Jewish practice.
We are an independent publisher based in St. Paul, Minnesota, where we are always on the lookout for good books, talented authors, and tasty kosher food. We are also well aware that, as part of the publishing industry, we rely in particular on trees as a natural resource for our books. While we continue to look into recycled paper options, we have committed to donate 5% of our profits to American Forests as a form of tzedakah (frequently translated as "charity," but actually meaning "justice" from the Hebrew tzedek).
It is perhaps because of our Jewish perspective that we strongly support those who are underrepresented or unfairly judged. To that end, we are very much in favor of independent publishers over the "big 6" New York publishing houses, and independent bookstores over the bookstore chains.
Yaldah Publishing is a member of IBPA - the Independent Book Publishers Association (formerly PMA) and the Midwest Independent Publishers Association (MIPA).
